What is a HIIT workout?
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. The concept behind HIIT workouts are repeated bouts of exercise with rest periods in between. This specific workout consists of 4 parts:
- The Warm Up: The warm up is responsible for elevating the heart rate while working the body for intense exercise. During the warm up period there are 6 exercise. Each exercise is performed for 20 seconds with a 10 second recovery break in between.
- The METCON: METCON stands for Metabolic Conditioning. This is the core of the workout. For this workout, there are 5 stations. In each station there are 2 exercises. These exercises are performed back-to-back for 30 seconds each. After completing the second exercise, then there is a 30 second recovery break before starting the next station with 2 more exercises. The completion of all 5 stations is one round, for this workout we will do 3 rounds.
- The Run: The crossfitters out there, this is the easy part. For weightlifters and members of the community who wanted to join in the event out of support, not so much. For this workout, the run will consist of two 300-yard runs with 2 minutes rest in between.
- The Cool Down: During this portion of the workout, stretches are performed to target specific muscles and muscle groups that were uses during the workout. There is a total of 5 stretches and each is held for 30 seconds. I do encourage you to continue stretching on your own and when you get home.
